Overview

What Express Entry means for Malawian applicants

Express Entry is the online system IRCC uses to manage three federal economic programs Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Federal Skilled Trades (FST), and Canadian Experience Class (CEC). For Malawian applicants without prior Canadian work experience, FSW is almost always the relevant entry point it's the only one of the three that doesn't require time already spent working in Canada. Candidates create a profile, are ranked by Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and the highest-ranked candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in regular draws.

Language advantage: English is Malawi's official language and the medium of instruction throughout higher education. This means many Malawian applicants already have strong English proficiency going into IELTS or CELPIP worth leveraging with focused test prep rather than starting from scratch.
FSW eligibility

The 67-point grid separate from your CRS score

Before your CRS score matters at all, you need 67 out of 100 points on the FSW selection grid to be eligible for the pool. This is a pass/fail eligibility check, not the ranking score used in draws.

Language (28 pts max)

IELTS General or CELPIP scores across reading, writing, listening, speaking.

Education (25 pts max)

Requires an ECA. A Malawian bachelor's degree typically scores in the low-to-mid 20s.

Work experience (15 pts max)

Skilled work experience (NOC TEER 0–3) in the last 10 years, in Malawi or elsewhere.

Age (12 pts max)

Maximum points between ages 18–35, decreasing gradually after that.

Arranged employment (10 pts)

A valid, qualifying Canadian job offer not required, but adds points if held.

Adaptability (10 pts max)

Points for a spouse's language ability, prior Canadian study/work, or family in Canada.

FAQ

Express Entry from Malawi questions answered

Do I need a job offer?
+
No. Federal Skilled Worker eligibility does not require a job offer, and since March 25, 2025 job offers no longer add CRS points - IRCC removed arranged-employment points to curb LMIA fraud. Most Malawian FSW applicants qualify on education, English test scores, and work experience alone.
How long does an ECA take?
+
A WES or ICAS assessment typically takes 6 to 8 weeks after the organization receives transcripts directly from the Malawian institution, though this can extend if the university is slow to respond to verification requests.
What CRS score do I need?
+
There's no fixed minimum you need a score at or above the cutoff in the draw you're competing in. Recent general draws have ranged roughly 480-545, with category-based draws for specific occupations sometimes lower.
What language test should I take?
+
IELTS General Training or CELPIP are both accepted for Express Entry. Since English is Malawi's official language and the language of higher education, many applicants score well, but focused test preparation is still recommended since CRS points are heavily weighted toward language.
Where do I complete biometrics?
+
Since no Visa Application Centre operates in Malawi, applicants must travel to the nearest country with a VAC. Check IRCC's current VAC list early in the process to plan travel and budget accordingly.
Can I apply directly from Malawi?
+
Yes. The Federal Skilled Worker program is specifically designed for applicants applying from outside Canada, including Malawi. You do not need any prior Canadian study or work experience.
