What is Family Sponsorship and how does it work from China?
IRCC has actively flagged document fraud in international student applications, here's exactly where Family Sponsorship fits for China applicants.
Family Sponsorship lets Canadian citizens and permanent residents sponsor eligible family members for permanent residence, most commonly spouses, common-law or conjugal partners, and dependent children, with a separate, capped program for parents and grandparents. Eligibility here is based on your relationship and the sponsor's qualification, not a CRS score or points grid.
The sponsor must meet minimum requirements (age, residency status, and for some categories, income thresholds via Canada's Low Income Cut-Off tables) and commits to supporting the sponsored person financially for a set period. Spousal and partner sponsorship has no annual cap and runs on an ongoing basis; the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is capped annually and has historically used an interest-to-sponsor intake process rather than continuous applications. Processing for spousal sponsorship currently runs around 12 months for outland (processed from outside Canada) applications, with some inland applicants eligible for an open work permit while they wait.

Eligibility
Family Sponsorship eligibility breakdown
| Factor | What it covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse / common-law / conjugal partner | Genuine, ongoing relationship; sponsor meets basic eligibility | No income requirement for the sponsor in most cases |
| Dependent children | Under 22 and not married/in a common-law relationship (with limited exceptions) | Can be included in a parent's application or sponsored separately |
| Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) | Annually capped; sponsor must meet a minimum income threshold | Historically opened for a limited intake window, not year-round |
| Sponsor eligibility | Canadian citizen or permanent resident, 18+, meets residency and (for some categories) income requirements | A sponsor with a recent history of default on a previous sponsorship may be temporarily ineligible |

Delays
What delays Family Sponsorship applications from China?
Most common issueThe most common Family Sponsorship delay is a relationship-evidence package that's too thin, a marriage certificate alone rarely satisfies IRCC without supporting evidence of an ongoing, genuine relationship over time.
On top of the general Family Sponsorship pitfalls above, China files run into two recurring issues: Acceptance letters IRCC can verify directly: IRCC's fraud task force has flagged thousands of acceptance letters as potentially fraudulent nationally. Only apply with an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution that IRCC can independently confirm, we check this before you submit. WES ECA, and sometimes CHSI/CDGDC too: A standard WES credential assessment is required for most post-study PR routes. Some pathways and employers also request CHSI or CDGDC academic verification, we confirm which your specific route needs.
Processing time
How long does Family Sponsorship take from China?
| Stage | Typical timeline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spousal / Partner Sponsorship | ~12 months | Outland processing time; inland applicants may be eligible for an open work permit while their application is in process. |
| China-specific note | Applicants from China apply via Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing. Sponsor and applicant documentation are reviewed concurrently, so delays on either side slow the whole file. | |
