Overview

What is the Canadian Experience Class (CEC)?

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is one of the three programs managed through Express Entry, designed specifically for people who already have skilled work experience inside Canada. For Nigerian nationals, it's typically the destination at the end of the study-to-PR pipeline: complete a program at a Designated Learning Institution, get a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), work for a year in a skilled role, then apply. It's also open to Nigerians on employer-sponsored work permits who've been working in Canada long enough. Because your qualifying experience is already Canadian, CEC skips two of the more time-consuming FSW requirements: proof of funds and, for basic eligibility, an educational credential assessment.

What are the requirements for CEC?

12 months of experience
Full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work in Canada, within the 3 years before you apply.
NOC TEER 0–3
Your job must fall into Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities categories 0 through 3 management, professional, technical, and skilled trade/service roles.
Minimum language score
CLB 7 for TEER 0/1 roles, CLB 5 for TEER 2/3 roles, on IELTS General or CELPIP.

You must have held valid status (a work permit, or authorization to work) for the entire period you're counting toward your 12 months time worked without authorization does not count, and can create bigger problems if discovered.

Which Canadian jobs qualify for CEC?

Canada's National Occupational Classification (NOC) groups every job into a TEER category based on the training, education, experience, and responsibilities it requires. Only TEER 0–3 count for CEC.

TEER 0–1

Management & professional

Examples: software developer, registered nurse, financial analyst, restaurant manager. Requires CLB 7.

TEER 2–3

Technical & skilled trades

Examples: administrative assistant, electrician, licensed practical nurse, cook. Requires CLB 5.

TEER 4–5

Does not qualify for CEC

Entry-level and labourer roles. These may still qualify for certain PNP streams instead.

Build 12 months' experience
Skilled work in Canada within the last 3 years, on valid status.
Take your language test

Submit employment, language, and education details to the pool.

Must state job title, duties, hours per week, salary, and dates of employment on company letterhead generic letters are a common cause of delay.
T4s and pay stubs
Corroborate your reference letter and confirm you were genuinely paid for the role during the claimed period.
Work permit copies
Every work permit or PGWP covering your qualifying period, showing you had legal authorization to work throughout.
ECA (optional but recommended)
Not required for eligibility, but a Nigerian degree assessment can add CRS points through skill transferability worth it if your score is borderline.
