Overview

Family class sponsorship for Senegalese families

If you're a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can sponsor certain Senegalese family members for permanent residence — most commonly a spouse or common-law/conjugal partner. Parent and grandparent sponsorship (PGP) is currently paused for new applications, but the Super Visa remains a genuinely useful alternative for extended family visits.

Important update

PGP is currently paused — here's what that means

Under Ministerial Instructions (MI89), IRCC paused new Parents and Grandparents Program sponsorship intake effective January 1, 2026. If you already submitted a PGP application before the pause, it continues processing normally. If you haven't, new PGP applications cannot currently be submitted.

What to do instead
The Super Visa remains fully active and lets Senegalese parents and grandparents visit for extended periods without needing PR — see the section below.
Spousal & partner sponsorship

The main open route for Senegalese families

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner. Applications can be processed inland (if the Senegalese partner is already in Canada with valid status) or outland (processed while the partner remains in Senegal, through the Dakar visa office).

Relationship typeKey requirement
Spouse (married)
Valid marriage recognized under both Senegalese and Canadian law
Common-law partner
Cohabitation for at least 12 continuous months
Conjugal partner
Genuine relationship of at least 1 year where cohabitation wasn't possible (e.g. immigration barriers)
The active alternative

Super Visa for parents and grandparents

The Super Visa is a long-term, multiple-entry visitor visa that lets parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents stay in Canada for extended periods — typically up to 5 years per visit — without applying for permanent residence.

Income flexibility eased March 31, 2026
Sponsor income requirements for the Super Visa were relaxed as of this date, making qualification more accessible for Senegalese-Canadian sponsors — check current thresholds when applying.

FAQ

Family sponsorship from Senegal — questions answered

Is PGP sponsorship still available for Senegalese families?
+
No. New PGP sponsorship intake has been paused since January 1, 2026 under Ministerial Instructions (MI89). Existing applications submitted before the pause continue processing, but Senegalese sponsors cannot currently submit new PGP applications. The Super Visa remains an active alternative for parents and grandparents.
What is the Super Visa and how does it work?
+
The Super Visa is a long-term multiple-entry visitor visa allowing parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to stay in Canada for extended periods without needing PR. Income flexibility rules for sponsors were eased effective March 31, 2026, making qualification somewhat more accessible.
How long does spousal sponsorship take?
+
IRCC's published service standard for outland spousal sponsorship is approximately 12 months for a complete application, though actual timelines vary based on application volume and complexity.
What documents prove a marriage for sponsorship?
+
A Senegalese marriage certificate (acte de mariage) issued by the civil registry, along with evidence of a genuine, ongoing relationship — photos, communication records, joint financial or living arrangements, and family/community acknowledgment of the relationship.
Does the sponsored family member need a casier judiciaire?
+
Yes. Like other Senegalese applicants, a sponsored family member must provide a casier judiciaire (criminal record extract) issued by the Senegalese courts, along with a medical exam.
Can a Senegalese fiancé(e) be sponsored?
+
Canada does not have a dedicated fiancé(e) visa category. Couples typically marry first (in Senegal or elsewhere) and then apply through spousal sponsorship, or the Senegalese partner applies for a visitor visa to marry in Canada before pursuing inland sponsorship.
