Express Entry from Sierra Leone to Canada
Canada's main points-based immigration system, and the direct route for Sierra Leonean applicants who don't yet have Canadian study or work experience. Here's the full FSW eligibility grid, how CRS is calculated, and what trips up applications from Sierra Leone specifically.
- Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) is the relevant Express Entry stream for Sierra Leoneans applying without Canadian ties.
- 67/100 points required on the FSW eligibility grid separate from your CRS ranking score used in draws.
- No job offer required for eligibility, and since March 25, 2025 a job offer no longer adds CRS points.
- ECA is mandatory WES or ICAS assessment of your Sierra Leonean degree, required before creating a profile.
- English test scores are the biggest lever on both eligibility and CRS Sierra Leone's English-language education system is a real advantage here.
- French-language draws don't generally apply to Sierra Leonean applicants Sierra Leone is Anglophone.
What Express Entry means for Sierra Leonean applicants
Express Entry is the online system IRCC uses to manage three federal economic programs Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Federal Skilled Trades (FST), and Canadian Experience Class (CEC). For Sierra Leonean applicants without prior Canadian work experience, FSW is almost always the relevant entry point it's the only one of the three that doesn't require time already spent working in Canada. Candidates create a profile, are ranked by Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and the highest-ranked candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in regular draws.
The 67-point grid separate from your CRS score
Before your CRS score matters at all, you need 67 out of 100 points on the FSW selection grid to be eligible for the pool. This is a pass/fail eligibility check, not the ranking score used in draws.
Language (28 pts max)
IELTS General or CELPIP scores across reading, writing, listening, speaking.
Education (25 pts max)
Requires an ECA. A Sierra Leonean bachelor's degree typically scores in the low-to-mid 20s.
Work experience (15 pts max)
Skilled work experience (NOC TEER 0–3) in the last 10 years, in Sierra Leone or elsewhere.
Age (12 pts max)
Maximum points between ages 18–35, decreasing gradually after that.
Arranged employment (10 pts)
A valid, qualifying Canadian job offer not required, but adds points if held.
Adaptability (10 pts max)
Points for a spouse's language ability, prior Canadian study/work, or family in Canada.
How your ranking score is built
Once you're eligible for FSW, your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score determines whether you receive an ITA in a given draw. Recent draws have varied general draws typically cut off higher than category-based draws for specific occupations.
| Component | Max points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Core factors (age, education, language, Canadian experience) | 500 | For single applicants slightly different split for those with a spouse |
| Skill transferability | 100 | Combinations like education + language, or foreign experience + language |
| Provincial nomination | +600 | Virtually guarantees an ITA in the next draw |
| Additional points | +50–200 | French ability, sibling in Canada, Canadian credential |
