What Express Entry means for Rwandan applicants
Express Entry is the online system IRCC uses to manage three federal economic programs Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Federal Skilled Trades (FST), and Canadian Experience Class (CEC). For Rwandan applicants without prior Canadian work experience, FSW is almost always the relevant entry point. What makes Rwanda distinctive among East African countries is the genuine choice of language strategy Kinyarwanda is the national language, but English and French are both official, and which one you test in can materially change your CRS outcome.
French-language category-based draws a real option here
IRCC periodically runs category-based Express Entry draws targeting specific groups, including candidates with strong French-language proficiency. These draws have historically had meaningfully lower CRS cutoffs than general draws sometimes by 100 points or more. For most East African countries this is irrelevant, since French isn't spoken. Rwanda is the exception: French is a genuine official language, used in formal government and legal documents, and still common among professionals educated before the 2008 switch to English-medium schooling.
The 67-point grid separate from your CRS score
Before your CRS score matters at all, you need 67 out of 100 points on the FSW selection grid to be eligible for the pool. This is a pass/fail eligibility check, not the ranking score used in draws and it applies the same way whether you test in English or French.
Education (25 pts max)
Requires an ECA. A Rwandan bachelor's degree typically scores in the low-to-mid 20s.
Work experience (15 pts max)
Skilled work experience (NOC TEER 0–3) in the last 10 years.
Age (12 pts max)
Maximum points between ages 18–35, decreasing gradually after that.
Arranged employment (10 pts)
A valid, qualifying Canadian job offer not required, but adds points if held.
Adaptability (10 pts max)
Points for a spouse's language ability, prior Canadian study/work, or family in Canada.

Once you're eligible for FSW, your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score determines whether you receive an ITA. Bilingual applicants (strong in both English and French) get an added boost through French-language additional points, on top of whichever draw they target.
