The fastest ways to add CRS points

Every point matters in a competitive pool. Here are the highest-impact levers - roughly ranked by effort-to-points ratio.

Improve your language score
Moving from CLB 9 to CLB 10 adds 3 points per skill - up to 12 points per test. With two languages, that's potentially 24 additional points. Retaking IELTS is typically the fastest, cheapest path to a meaningful bump.
Up to +24 pts
Gain Canadian work experience
Each year of Canadian skilled work experience adds 40–53 core points, plus activates powerful skill transferability combinations. One year in Canada can translate to 80+ total CRS points when transferability is factored in.
Up to +80 pts
Get a Provincial Nomination
A PNP nomination adds 600 points - essentially guaranteeing an ITA at the very next draw. Many provinces run targeted streams for specific occupations and regions. Your GetNorthPath consultant will assess your best PNP options on the consultation call.
+600 pts
🇫🇷
Add French language skills
Demonstrating CLB 7+ in French (TEF or TCF) while also having English CLB 4+ adds 50 points. IRCC has been running dedicated French-language draws with cut-offs as low as 379 - a strategically important path for bilingual candidates.
Up to +50 pts
Secure an arranged employment offer
A valid LMIA-backed job offer adds 50 or 200 points depending on the TEER level. For candidates already in Canada on a work permit with a Canadian employer, this may already be within reach.
Up to +200 pts
Claim every transferability point
If you have foreign work experience and strong language scores, you may be leaving up to 50 points unclaimed. Revisit the Skill Transferability section above to make sure you've selected every combination you qualify for.

2026 Express Entry invitation rounds

IRCC holds draw rounds approximately every two weeks. CEC draws consistently cut off 20–30 points lower than general rounds. French-language draws have produced the lowest cut-offs - as low as 379 - making French proficiency a powerful strategic lever.

Understanding your score

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator accurate?
+
This calculator uses IRCC's official published CRS formula across all four factor categories: core human capital (A and B), spouse/common-law partner factors (C), skill transferability (D), and additional factors (E). The maximum score without a provincial nomination is 600; with a nomination the ceiling is 1,200. This calculator does not cover FSWP 67-point grid eligibility - that is a separate check for whether you can enter the Express Entry pool at all. For complex profiles, a GetNorthPath consultant will do a full eligibility and CRS review on your consultation call.
What's the difference between a CEC draw and a general draw?
+
CEC (Canadian Experience Class) draws are limited to candidates eligible under that specific stream - meaning at least 1 year of skilled work experience in Canada (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3). Because the eligible pool is smaller and more homogeneous, CEC cut-offs are consistently 20–30 points lower than general draws. If you have Canadian work experience, you can be considered for CEC-specific rounds, which can dramatically improve your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply at the next draw round.
My score is below the cut-off. What are my options?
+
Three main strategies: (1) Wait and watch - cut-offs fluctuate, and category-specific draws (CEC, French-language, STEM) regularly produce lower thresholds; (2) Actively improve your score - language retesting, gaining Canadian work experience, and securing a job offer are the highest-impact levers; (3) Pursue a Provincial Nomination - most provinces run targeted streams that don't require a high CRS to enter, and the 600-point nomination bonus makes an ITA essentially guaranteed. Your GetNorthPath consultation call will map out the fastest path to an ITA for your specific profile.
Do spouse points help or hurt my total score?
+
It depends on your spouse's profile. When you declare a spouse, your core human capital points (factor A) are calculated using the "with spouse" column of IRCC's table - which is slightly lower than the single applicant column. However, you gain access to spouse factor points (factor C) - worth up to 40 additional points based on your spouse's education, language scores, and Canadian work experience. If your spouse has strong credentials, the net effect is typically a meaningful boost. If your spouse has no Canadian experience or language test scores, the net effect is usually a reduction of 5–15 points compared to applying as a single applicant. This calculator handles the adjustment automatically.
How does the tie-break work?
+
When more candidates hold exactly the cut-off score than there are invitations left to issue, IRCC uses the date and time a candidate submitted or last updated their Express Entry profile as a tie-break. Candidates with an earlier timestamp are invited first. This means staying active in the pool - keeping your profile current and not letting it expire - is important. An older timestamp at the exact cut-off score can mean the difference between receiving an ITA and being passed over for that round.
