How it works

Profile, pool, ITA, then eAPR

Express Entry is not a visa - it is a system to manage applications for three economic PR programs. You are ranked by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and selected in federal draws when your score meets the cut-off (or you hold a valid provincial nomination worth +600 points).

CRS
Your rank in the pool
Age, education, language, work experience, spouse factors, and skill transferability feed into a CRS score (max 600 without a nomination, or 1,200 with a provincial nomination). Draws are program- specific (general, FST, CEC-focused, or category-based) - your consultant helps you time strategy and documentation.

Time-critical

If you are drawn from the pool, you receive an ITA under FSW, CEC, or FST. The clock starts: you must file your electronic Application for Permanent Residence (eAPR) and pay fees before the deadline. Our platform helps you track every form (IMM) and every document in one place.

1
Enter the pool with a valid one-year profile
2
Receive an ITA by ID (program- specific draw or category-based)
3
Gather police certs, work proofs, medical, photos, and digital forms
4

Add-on

Many workers combine Express Entry with a PNP. An enhanced or base nomination, when linked to your profile, can push your CRS to the top of the pool. GetNorthPath covers both the federal ITA and provincial streams - read our PNP page

Three federal programs

FSW, CEC, and FST - one pool

You can only be invited under the program you qualify for. CEC is for skilled Canadian work experience; FSW is for foreign skilled work; FST is for qualified trades with certificates or job offers in specific NOCs.

Canadian Experience CEC
In-Canada
1 year+ skilled work in Canada in the last 3 years (NOC 0, 1, 2, or 3) while on a valid work permit in most cases
CLB 7+ for NOC 0,1; CLB 5+ for NOC 2,3 in English or French (per 2021 rules; verify on IRCC)
Intended to live outside Québec (or follow Québec’s programs separately)
Top choice for many PGWP & permit holdersCheck CEC
Federal Skilled Trades FST
Trades NOCs
2+ years of full-time skilled trade work in the 5 years before you apply, or a certificate + a valid job offer as defined by IRCC
CLB 5+ speaking and listening, CLB 4+ reading and writing in English or French (minimums)
NOCs are limited to groupings listed by IRCC for the trades program
Lower language floor than FSW, trade-specific NOCsTrades consult
Am I eligible?

Express Entry - What matters most

Eligibility depends on which of the three programs (FSW, CEC, or FST) you qualify for. The consultant validates NOC, language, education, and work experience against IRCC rules and your CRS before you file.

Core factors
FSW & CEC
FST
ITA & eAPR
What most Express Entry candidates need
Skilled work experience in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 - the exact rules differ for FSW (foreign), CEC (Canadian), and FST (listed trades)
Approved language test - minimum CLB levels depend on the program and (for CEC) your NOC; higher scores raise your CRS in the pool
Education you can verify - Canadian credential or, for foreign degrees, an ECA from a designated body when required
Proof of funds when IRCC requires it (many FSW/FST candidates; often waived for CEC or with a valid Canadian job offer - confirm current rules)
Admissibility - no serious criminal inadmissibility, honest declarations, and medical fitness after ITA
Intent to live outside Québec (Express Entry is federal; Québec runs separate programs)
Factors that raise your CRS
Canadian work experience - a major CRS driver, especially combined with strong language and education
Canadian education - additional points for credentials from a DLI, with length and level of study mattering
High language scores - CLB 9+ in English or strong French (or both) can unlock big CRS gains and category-based draw opportunities
Spouse or partner factors - education, language, and Canadian work of a non-accompanying or accompanying spouse can add CRS points
Optional boosts - valid job offer (where it counts in EE), a sibling in Canada, French proficiency, or a provincial nomination (+600) can change your outcome
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
At least one year of continuous full-time (or equal part-time) skilled work abroad in the last ten years, in a single NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation
Score 67+ on the six FSW selection factors (language, education, experience, age, arranged employment, adaptability) - this is the gateway test before you can enter the pool as FSW
Language and settlement funds: meet the minimums IRCC sets for the FSW class (e.g. CLB 7 in a first language for the primary NOC) unless current rules list an exception
Once in the pool, you compete on CRS - the 67-point grid and CRS are different; we help align NOC, ECA, and test dates to your best claim
ECA and language results must support the education and CLB you enter; mismatches are a common refusal risk
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
At least 12 months of full-time (or equal) skilled work in Canada in the last three years, in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 - with authorization to work, not self-employment, study co-op, etc., except as IRCC allows
Language: minimums depend on your main NOC (higher for TEER 0 or 1 than for TEER 2 or 3) - we verify against the published table before you file
CEC is a strong path for PGWP and other work-permit holders; no FSW 67 grid - eligibility is work + language (and inadmissibility rules)
Plan to live outside Québec; CEC and FSW pool strategy often differ - the consultant picks the class that matches your history
Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
At least two years of full-time skilled trade work in the five years before you apply, or a mix of an IRCC-accepted certificate and a job offer, per current FST rules
Your NOC must be on IRCC’s eligible trades list; not every skilled trade job qualifies for FST
Language: CLB 5 in speaking and listening, CLB 4 in reading and writing (or stronger for CRS)
Many FST candidates need a valid job offer for one year+ from up to two employers, or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian authority - as defined by IRCC for the class
Proof of funds can apply to FST when you are not working in Canada or have no valid job offer (confirm against the current funds table)
FST in the pool
FST draws are less frequent than all-program or CEC draws; timing an ITA can take patience - your CRS and category-based or program-specific rounds matter
Red Seal, provincial trade certification, and a strong employer letter can be decisive - we line up NOC, duties, and offer wording with IRCC expectations
Job offers must be genuine, from eligible employers, and in the right NOC - a weak offer can fail both eligibility and points
Not sure if you are FST vs FSW? A consultant can map your NOC, experience, and certificates to the program that actually matches your file
After your ITA
60 days to submit a complete eAPR, pay required IRCC fees, and upload all supporting evidence - the deadline in your account is strict
Forms such as IMM 0008, Schedule 3/Schedule A (as applicable), family and background schedules - every answer must match your profile and your documents
Police certificates for every country and period IRCC requires; medical with a panel physician; biometrics if requested
Work proof that lines up with the same NOC and dates you claimed in the pool; gaps or new jobs since the ITA need a clear story
If you claimed a job offer in Express Entry, your employer letter, LMIA or LMIA-exempt number, and duties must support the points you received
Common eAPR mistakes
Letting language or ECA results expire, or using scores weaker than the CLB/ECA you used to enter the pool (unless the rule allows a valid re-test story)
Changing primary NOC or dates of work after the ITA without documentation - must align to what made you eligible
Uploading a medical or police cert that is too old, wrong jurisdiction, or missing a dependant’s certificate
Missing dependant forms, custody documents, or relationship proof when family members are on the file
GetNorthPath assembles a single checklist, AI-validates each upload, and a consultant reviews the package before you pay final IRCC fees and submit

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between FSW, CEC, and FST?
+
FSW (Federal Skilled Worker) is for candidates with foreign skilled work experience. CEC (Canadian Experience Class) is for at least one year of skilled work in Canada. FST (Federal Skilled Trades) is for eligible trades with required experience, job offer, and/or certificate of qualification. Each program has its own entry criteria; you are ranked in one pool, but the ITA line will show which class you are invited under.
How long do I have after I get an ITA?
+
You typically have 60 days to submit a complete eAPR, including all forms, fees, and document uploads. Missing the deadline or submitting an incomplete file can forfeit the invitation, so the window is time-critical. GetNorthPath is built to help you line up every IMM form, police certificate, and proof before you pay IRCC’s fees on the eAPR.
What CRS score do I need?
+
The cut-off changes with every draw and can target specific programs (general, CEC, FST, or category-based). There is no fixed "pass mark" in advance. Use the official CRS tool or our free CRS calculator to see your position, and discuss strategy and timing in a consultation.
Do I need a PNP to use Express Entry?
+
No. Many people get an ITA from the federal pool alone. A PNP is optional, but a linked nomination can add 600 points in most cases, which often leads to a quick ITA. If PNP is right for you, we coordinate the provincial application alongside your online Express Entry file.
What is included in the $299 CAD service?
+
A flat, end-to-end case fee for the pathway we agree on: profile strategy, form preparation, document checklist, data entry into the relevant IRCC forms, and a licensed Canadian immigration consultant (RCIC) or equivalent sign-off for eligible matters before submission. IRCC and third-party fees (e.g. medicals, police certificates) are not included. Government fees and biometrics are paid to IRCC directly on your eAPR or profile.
What is a NOC code and why does it matter for Express Entry?
+
Your National Occupational Classification (NOC) code describes your skilled work using the TEER system. CRS points, program eligibility (FSW, CEC, FST), and job-offer validity all depend on choosing the correct primary NOC. We help you align your employment history with IRCC’s NOC guidance before you lock in your profile.
Can I update my Express Entry profile after I enter the pool?
+
Yes. You should update language tests, work history, marital status, dependents, and other material facts as they change. Some updates can affect your CRS immediately. Keep documents consistent with what you claim-IRCC compares your eAPR to your profile history.
What documents are most often requested for an Express Entry eAPR?
+
Typical bundles include passports, proof of funds, education (ECAs where required), language tests, work reference letters aligned to NOC duties, police certificates, medical exam results, digital photos, and marriage or dependent documents where applicable. Exact lists vary by program and personal circumstances-your consultant maps the full set to your ITA line.
