What is a study permit extension?
Still studying in Canada? You need to extend - not reapply from scratch.
A study permit extension is an application to continue your legal student status in Canada
when your current study permit is about to expire. If you're changing programs, extending your degree
timeline, or moving from one program to another, you need to extend your study permit from inside Canada using
Form IMM 5709 E.
This is different from applying for a new study permit from
outside Canada (IMM 1294). Because you're already in Canada, you apply online through IRCC's portal - and as
long as you apply before your current permit expires, you receive implied status, which lets
you continue studying while IRCC processes your application.
Apply before your permit expires
The most critical rule: you must submit your extension application before your
current study permit expiry date. Applying even one day late means you're out of status and cannot
continue studying legally.
Implied status lets you keep studying
Once you apply before expiry, you receive implied status - the legal right to
continue studying while IRCC reviews your application, even if processing takes months. Implied status
ends if your application is refused.
Understanding implied status in Canada
What it is
Implied status is a legal state where you can continue the conditions of your
previous permit (e.g., studying) while IRCC processes your renewal application - even if the permit
itself has expired on paper.
What you can do on implied status
Continue attending your DLI and studying full-time. You may also work up to 24
hours/week off-campus if your expired permit authorised it.
What you cannot do on implied status
You cannot leave Canada and re-enter on implied status - you need a valid
permit or visitor visa to re-enter. If you must travel, speak to your consultant first.
If your extension is refused
Implied status ends immediately upon refusal. You must stop studying and leave
Canada or file an appeal. GetNorthPath minimises refusal risk through thorough AI validation and
consultant review.
Implied status only exists if you applied before your permit expired
Eligibility
Who qualifies for a study permit extension?
You must meet all the "must" criteria below. If any "must not"
conditions apply to you, book a consultation before applying - your situation may be more complex.
You must meet all
of these
Currently in Canada on a valid study permit
(or within 90 days of expiry)
Currently enrolled (or have received a new
Letter of Acceptance) at an eligible DLI
Plan to continue full-time studies in Canada
Sufficient financial resources to support
your continued studies (proof of funds)
No criminal record in Canada or abroad that
could affect admissibility
Have complied with all conditions of your
existing study permit
If your program has a co-op component, it
must be a mandatory part of your curriculum
Situations
needing a consultation first
Your current study permit expired more than
90 days ago - this is a restoration case, not an extension
You are switching from a non-DLI institution
to a DLI (may require re-applying from outside Canada)
Your previous study permit had conditions you
did not comply with (e.g., studied part-time without authorisation)
You have or have had a removal order or ban
from Canada
You are studying at an institution that has
had its DLI status revoked (check the current IRCC DLI list)
Your passport expires before your desired
new permit end date - renew your passport first
Time-critical
Your permit expiry date is a hard deadline. GetNorthPath can have your application ready in
days.
Once you realise your study permit is expiring, the clock is running. GetNorthPath onboards you
the same day you contact us - AI validates your documents immediately, and your consultant can have your IMM
5709 E reviewed and ready to submit within 3–5 business days.
These are the standard documents required for a study permit extension from inside Canada. Your
personalised checklist in the GetNorthPath portal will confirm exactly what applies to your situation.
AI validates all of these automatically
GetNorthPath's AI checks every document the moment you upload it - verifying
expiry dates, cross-referencing names and dates, confirming DLI numbers, and flagging anything that
doesn't meet IRCC requirements.

AI cross-references DLI against IRCC's current database automatically.
Applicant manually looks up DLI - outdated numbers are a common submission error.

Many applicants submit outdated form versions - causing immediate rejection.

Common mistakes
The top study permit extension errors - and how GetNorthPath prevents them.
1
Applying after the permit expires
The single most common and costly mistake. Applying even one day after your permit
expires means you've lost status - you're now out of status and cannot legally study. Restoration is a
separate, complex process.
Onboard with
GetNorthPath at least 30 days before expiry. We flag approaching deadlines
proactively via WhatsApp.
2
Using an outdated IMM 5709 E form version
IRCC updates form versions periodically. Submitting an old version is an automatic
rejection - IRCC will not process it. Many applicants find the form via Google and download a cached older
version without realising.
Our form
library is updated the day IRCC publishes a new version. You always submit the
current one.
3
Passport expiring before new permit end date
IRCC will not issue a study permit extension valid beyond your passport expiry date. If
your passport expires before your program ends, you must renew it first - or IRCC will cap your new permit
at your passport date.
AI checks
passport expiry vs. requested permit end date immediately on upload. You'll
know in seconds.
4
DLI not on the current IRCC approved list
Institutions are added and removed from the Designated Learning Institution list. An
institution that was a DLI when you enrolled may no longer be - and applications citing an invalid DLI are
rejected.
AI verifies
your DLI number against IRCC's current official database every time you
upload your enrollment letter.
5
Insufficient or inconsistent proof of funds
Bank statements showing a large deposit shortly before the application - without
consistent prior balance - raise IRCC red flags about whether you actually have the financial resources
claimed.
AI checks your
bank statements for 3–6 month balance consistency. If funds appear
suddenly deposited, we flag this and advise how to address it.
6
Not disclosing program changes or breaks
Switching programs, taking a medical leave, or studying part-time must be disclosed and
explained in your extension application. Omitting these creates inconsistencies that IRCC officers will
notice.
Consultant
review catches all disclosure requirements for your specific situation and
drafts appropriate explanation letters.

Frequently asked questions
Study permit extension - your questions answered.
You can apply up to 90 days before your study permit expires. Applying early is strongly
recommended - IRCC processing for study permit extensions takes 4–16 weeks, and applying early ensures you
have implied status long before your permit expires. Don't wait until you're within 30 days of expiry -
apply as soon as you know your program is continuing.
If you applied before your permit expired, you receive implied status - the legal right to
continue studying under the same conditions as your expired permit while IRCC reviews your application. On
implied status you can continue attending classes and working off-campus up to 24 hours/week if your
previous permit allowed it. You cannot leave Canada and re-enter, however. Implied status ends immediately
if your application is refused.
Yes. When extending your study permit for a new or different program, include a new Letter
of Acceptance from your new DLI and an explanation letter describing the reason for the program change. The
new program must still be at an eligible DLI. If you're changing from a graduate to an undergraduate program
(or vice versa), or from a private to a public institution, your consultant will advise on whether any
additional documentation is needed.
Yes, if your original study permit allowed you to work (typically up to 24 hours/week
off-campus during academic sessions and full-time during breaks), you can continue working under those
conditions on implied status. The work authorisation is tied to your study permit conditions - if your
permit authorised work, you can continue. If your permit did not authorise work, you cannot work while your
extension is being processed.
If your study permit expired more than 90 days ago, you are no longer eligible for a
regular extension - you need to apply for status restoration under IRPR Section 182. This is more complex
than a regular extension and has a 90-day restoration window from the date of losing status. After 90 days
from the date of status loss, you must leave Canada and apply for a new study permit from outside. Contact
GetNorthPath immediately via WhatsApp if you're in this situation - time is critical.
Current IRCC processing times for study permit extensions from inside Canada range from 4
to 16 weeks, depending on your country of citizenship and application completeness. GetNorthPath ensures
your application is complete and accurate from the outset - incomplete applications cause delays or requests
for additional documents. Because you receive implied status once you apply, processing time doesn't affect
your ability to keep studying.
Biometrics collected for Canadian immigration purposes are generally valid for 10 years. If
you provided biometrics when applying for your original study permit and they haven't expired, you don't
need to provide them again. IRCC's system will notify you if new biometrics are required when you submit
your application. GetNorthPath's consultant will check your biometrics status during the consultation and
advise if a new appointment is needed.
Your study permit expiry is coming. Let's get ahead of it.
